Last year, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a new film. This production, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While the character's name Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• The shortlist included several politicians, among them an opposition leader later murdered and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman close to the events stated the key criterion was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Experts agree that the notion of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it might seek to question.
