During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange a place to stay after getting there, yet when I arrived, a large conference was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more folks with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused as a woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered if I was OK. I shared my predicament and right away she said I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot and secure to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a young woman letting a guy she’d just met stay in her room. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not go to ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her good deed tenfold. The world needs more people who show such kindness.
