American Armed Forces Executes Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths

As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US armed forces carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”

Background and Prior Strikes

This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.

Only on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has faced increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
