Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
