California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to cut government money from California and suggested revoking the authority to provide CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy stated, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier announced he was blocking $40m from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration responded in a previous comment addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A this month's poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
