Learning centers in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
