Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
