French authorities to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
