Government Accused of Assault on Freedom of Expression After British Journalist Detained
A prominent Muslim civil liberties organization has alleged the current government of a clear affront to free speech” following national border officials held British journalist Sami Hamdi this past Sunday.
The group claimed that Hamdi was held at San Francisco International airport due to speaking out against the Israeli current military campaign in Gaza. Hamdi is among a number of individuals who have been arrested and expelled by federal agents for sharing pro-Palestinian stances.
The Department of Homeland Security said that the journalist’s visa had been terminated, and that he was in custody “pending removal.”
Immigration Authorities Holds UK Reporter After Criticism of Israel
UK reporter Sami Hamdi was allegedly held over the weekend by ICE agents at a major US airport, and the civil rights group claims that this move is obvious reprisal for the Muslim political commentator’s criticism of Israeli actions while traveling in the US.
Comments from the organization labeled it was “an obvious insult to free speech” to detain Hamdi for criticizing Israel’s continuing military operations in the Gaza region while he was involved on a lecture series. A government representative added in a separate statement that Hamdi is slated for removal.
