Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Future governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place appears as home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and zone districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported additional victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff said.
