Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
