The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
