New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
