The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France is preparing a book this autumn titled A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his experience endured in custody.

The revelation came less than two weeks after Sarkozy was released as his appeal proceeds the court ruling on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain presidential race money linked to the government of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, suggesting the memoir will focus on his reflections from isolation as opposed to a broader observation regarding the overcrowded and crisis-hit French prison system.

“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears constant sound,” he adds. “The racket persists relentlessly. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is strengthened behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, easing this nightmare manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It affects one every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

The former president, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first former head in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure from France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the texts he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, a plot where an innocent man is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

The former leader remained in isolation due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters including private facilities at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns any food might have been spat on. Options were available to prepare his own meals yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client daily while he was in prison, informed the court his safety would improve released rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, heard shouts after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody last month following a French court sentenced him to a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire election financing during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case set for next spring.
