This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
