What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
