Extreme heat and intense bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the south-west.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow recent bushfires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for later this week in areas within SA and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, delivering intense heat to much of the area.

The combination of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Global Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after powerful winds compromised the urban power grid, with toppled trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Severe impact on power systems is expected to cause further problems as utility companies scramble to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Covers Typically Clear Area

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a key transport hub below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended haze has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn rainfall that resulted in the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Tourist Islands

And in Spain, a weather system has brought intense rain, powerful winds and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not associate with this favored holiday destination. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snowfall, strong northerly winds swept across the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on several locations. The effect of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
