During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
